Welcome to our San Diego Jiu Jitsu gym. With overy 40 weekly adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) classes, we offer the largest adult program of all Jiu Jitsu schools in San Diego. Our BJJ gym offers strong Fundamentals for beginners, outstanding intermediate and advanced instruction, and high level Competition Jiu Jitsu training for all who wish to compete.

Our Head Jiu Jitsu coach is the legendary Baret Yoshida. He’s a 3x IBJJF Black Belt World Champion, 3x ADCC medalist, and known worldwide as one of the top American Pioneers in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Baret teaches 26 BJJ classes at The Arena, offering a phenomenal opportunity to be personally tutored by one of the best Jiu Jitsu coaches / competitors on the planet.

We teach more than 40 weekly adult Jiu Jitsu classes at our San Diego location. This is the single largest adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program in the U.S. and we cater to all levels of students.

We offer numerous Fundamental BJJ classes, so our novice students build a strong foundation to base their future development on. We also offer a large amount of intermediate / advanced classes taught directly by Master Baret Yoshida. These San Diego BJJ classes are based on a specific curriculum and continually build on each other. Utilizing constantly evolving techniques that are competition tested, we advance our students towards receiving the coveted Black Belt under Baret Yoshida.

Under Baret Yoshida’s leadership, we have developed an outstanding Competition Team. As one of the best Jiu Jitsu teams in San Diego, we have a strong focus on competition training and hold 4 IBJJF training camps every year, as well as mini-camps for local tournaments.

We regularly win Adult BJJ Team Title (we don’t offer children’s Jiu Jitsu training) at every local tournament we enter. Many of our competitors  place in the top 3 in the IBJJF Pan American and World Championships in both Gi and No Gi Jiu Jitsu, as well as in a variety of other San Diego, National and International tournaments.

Baret Yoshida is a 3x International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Black Belt World Champion, 3x Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Medalist and the only man in history to compete in the ADCC 10 times. To say he’s a BJJ legend is an understatement.

We also have numerous other outstanding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Coaches who teach according to Baret’s methods. These instructors train under Master Baret daily, so all our students receive cohesive coaching throughout our program.

“Come to the Arena. It’s great BJJ instruction. All the Jiu Jitsu classes you want to take. It gives me a great opportunity for training with a high class, highly professional, highly athletic group of instructors and also their students. Their structured fundamentals to advanced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are great. Everybody is really cool. Baret’s awesome. Down to earth. They’ll give you pointers before, after and during class. It’s easy to go to one another to get a few tips on the lesson of the day. Or even to provide any tips outside the gym.”

“Baret’s one of the most dedicated people I’ve ever met. And him being such an active BJJ competitor sets a good example for all the students here. Also, him just teaching so many Jiu Jitsu classes here. He’s always here and a lot of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools just don’t have that type of instruction. In a lot of Jiu Jitsu schools, the head instructor is only there sometimes or he’s on his phone the whole time. Baret doesn’t mess around with that, man. He’s always teaching. It’s such a good vibe. I encourage everybody to come out here and train with us.”

Looking for the best Jiu Jitsu school near you? When choosing a Jiu Jitsu school to join, schedule, price, level of instruction, and training environment are all important factors in your decision making process. The Arena offers the most complete schedule of any Jiu Jitsu school in San Diego, with 7 classes daily between Gi and No Gi. Classes are taught by multiple time World Champion Baret Yoshida, an icon in the Jiu Jitsu community. Master Baret takes from his years of experience competing at the highest level to provide the highest level of instruction available. The price point for membership is far lower than any other gym in San Diego and The Arena provides more training times and mat space compared to anywhere else. (27,000 sq. ft. total with over 8,000 sq. ft. of Jiu Jitsu mat space) The final factor to consider is the environment. Training combat sports can be intimidating at first, and depending on the environment at the gym you choose, this process can be easy or hard. At the Arena we have a great Jiu Jitsu community that will support you in your journey. The training will be challenging but with the solid support of your peers and the people that have come before you, the path will seem possible. Your training partners will often become lifelong friends.
Jiu Jitsu has many benefits to the practitioner. The primary goal of learning Jiu Jitsu, otherwise known as the “gentle art”, is for self defense. It teaches a smaller and weaker person to use leverage to defend themselves from bigger and stronger opponents. Another benefit that Jiu Jitsu provides to the individual is increased physical strength and cardio. Students will also have increased self confidence and the ability to remain level headed in stressful situations, all while making new friends in the Jiu Jitsu community, thus improving the health and wellness of the individual.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport based on ground fighting. It focuses on using leverage to control, gain a dominant position, or subdue a potential attacker or opponent. These techniques also include various joint manipulations and chokeholds that force your opponent to submit or give up.

BJJ or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is a branch of the Jiu Jitsu lineage tree that began with The Japanese many centuries ago. Intended for use at close combat, Jiu Jitsu became the foundation of many modern martial arts and combat sports, such as Judo, Aikido, and Sambo. In the 1920s, Jiu Jitsu was introduced to the Gracie family in Brazil. They developed their own style of the art and named it Gracie Jiu Jitsu, which later became known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Jiu Jitsu is a great martial art for beginners.  We currently offer two fundamentals classes daily that focus on providing beginners with a strong foundation of understanding and application.

Everyone will have a different answer to this question. Many variables will determine your schedule of training, goals, availability, and current fitness level, etc. As a general guideline, we recommend training 2-3 times weekly to see gains in knowledge, application of the art, and physical conditioning. The Arena schedule makes this attainable with close to 40 weekly Jiu Jitsu classes to accommodate you.
