Boxing, known as “The Sweet Science”, is one of the oldest martial arts in history. Boxing as a sport was practiced more than seven thousand years ago in ancient Mesopotamia (the region of modern-day Iraq). Boxing was then continued on through Sumerian, Egyptian and Greek cultures. The Greeks made it an Olympic sport in 688 BC.
Today, Boxing has evolved to an extremely competitive sport, offering fighters the best hand striking available in a combat art. We can teach you to box up to a professional level, integrate Boxing into your MMA game, or simply train you while you enjoy the numerous benefits Boxing has to offer.
MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world. It is also a sport with ancient history, introduced into the Greek Olympics as the sport of Pankration in 648 BC.
The Arena’s MMA classes are where we bring everything together. Working on striking, including techniques from Boxing and Muay Thai, as well as Grappling, including No Gi Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling, we integrate each discipline from the ground up.
Our MMA classes are for EVERYONE, INCLUDING BEGINNERS, where people will be matched up by their abilities. So, if you have not done MMA before, but want to try it, DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED. We can teach you how to do things the right way from the very beginning. Most importantly, our MMA classes are FUN, and you will have a great time training in them.
No Gi Jiu Jitsu is a subset of Submission Grappling / Wrestling. It has evolved over thousands of years like all Wrestling related systems, but is now a modern sport managed by The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA), the main governing body for Wrestling worldwide. FILA calls the sport Grappling and includes it as 1 of the 5 main styles of Wrestling.
The Arena focuses on No Gi Jiu Jitsu training due to the constant domination by its practioners in Grappling tournaments across the world. These tournaments include the ADCC, the IBJJF National, Pan American and World Championships, Grapplers Quest, NAGA, and more. This domination by No Gi Jiu Jitsu competitors leaves no doubt about the effectiveness of this style.
We have great No Gi Jiu Jitsu instructors, including 2007 ADCC Submission Grappling World Champion Rani Yahya, as well as other instructors who have won National and Pan-American championships. Our classes are particularly well-suited for competitors who want to learn an aggressive submission style, whether for Grappling, MMA or both.
Wrestling is the oldest of all martial arts, with roots in countries such as China, India, and Greece. Today, International Wrestling recognizes 5 different styles, including Beach, Freestyle, Grappling, Greco-Roman, and Sambo. There are also many types of Folk Wrestling as well as Collegiate Wrestling, popular in the U.S.
The Arena currently offers Wrestling instruction during our MMA classes, as well as our Pro Team training, but will be starting a Competitive Wrestling program in June led by 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Stephen Abas. If you have no wrestling experience, but would like to learn, please come to our MMA classes. If you are a skilled wrestler, whether you are or are not a professional MMA fighter, please contact us if you would like to join us during our Pro Team Grappling practices.
Muay Thai (also known as the art of 8 limbs) is a devastating fighting system allowing the use of eights points of contact, including hands, feet, elbows and knees. Like all the martial arts we teach, Muay Thai has ancient roots.
While Muay Thai has evolved into a competitive sport, the original combative techniques are still practiced in certain styles of Muay Thai. This is why we teach 2 different styles of Muay Thai at The Arena.
The first is a Combat style of Muay Thai taught by Kru Mark, who teaches his family’s style of Muay Thai called Deth Ko Sin. It has been passed down from father to son for the past 5 generations, originating from Thai battlefield combat.
We also have a Sport/MMA style of Muay Thai taught by Felipe Portela, a Brazilian Chute Boxe Academy Muay Thai and MMA Fighter. Chute Boxe is the team that launched Anderson Silva, Shogun Rua, Wanderlei Silva, Cris "Cyborg" Santos, etc.
