If you are new to the arena of mixed martial arts, it can be confusing to figure out what type of training you need in order to become a skilled MMA competitor. Even if you just wish to use MMA training to improve your physical condition, you will want to think about many different fighting styles, such as boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling and jiu-jitsu.
To accomplish this task, you truly need to join a top-notch San Diego MMA gym. Find a gym that includes strength-training classes, boxing classes, jiu-jitsu classes, wrestling classes and Muay Thai classes, as all of these skills are important components of MMA. It is best to find a gym that allows you to take as many classes as you like each month for one single fee. In addition, try to find an MMA gym in San Diego with instructors that have had actual professional experience.
After selecting your San Diego MMA gym, select one specific martial art or skill that you want to learn. It is not a great idea to try to tackle three or four skills at once. Just choose your favorite, such as boxing or jiu-jitsu and start with those classes first. Once you have progressed a bit, you can talk to your instructors about adding another type of class, but don’t try to grab too many skills at one time.
Even when you focus on just one skill, such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you can certainly work out and build muscle strength and endurance. Be sure to take a few cardio classes and some strength training classes, as well. These will make your body more fit and you will be a stronger fighter. The gym staff and instructors can set you up with a solid plan, and you can make it more intense as your body gains strength.
The type of gear that you will need probably depends mainly on what type of fighting skills you are focused on. If you prefer Muay Thai or boxing, there are some important pieces of safety gear that are essential, including gloves and tapes and perhaps shin guards if you are working on Muay Thai. Jiu-jitsu requires far less gear, and you simply need what everyone needs – a good-fitting pair of fighting shorts, a rash guard, a mouthpiece and an athletic cup.
One part of training that is important but can’t be purchased is coming into the gym with a good attitude. You need to be ready to work hard and focus on learning new skills. It’s hard to be the beginner at the gym, but most instructors are happy to teach anyone who is willing to give 100% effort. Leave your negativity at home and come in focused and excited about your new life in mixed martial arts.
