The whole idea behind mixed martial arts is that fighters learn and utilize a variety of skills from different disciplines. While there are fighters who generally rely on one particular type of fighting, such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu, here are a few great fighters that have an impressively full arsenal of martial arts skills.

Few fighters truly personify the image of a well-rounded fighter more than Anderson Silva. Not only does he hold a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he has earned quite a few other black belts. With black belts in judo, taekwondo and Muay Thai as well as two professional boxing matches to his resume, Silva could easily hold the title of the fighter with the strongest skill set in mixed martial arts.

Another MMA pro with a diverse portfolio of skills is Georges St.-Pierre, who holds black belts in a variety of disciplines. He holds a black belt in Kyokushin Kaikan, which was the first martial art he studied. He also holds a black belt in Shidokan, which is another form of karate. In addition, St.-Pierre has earned a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Gaidojutsu, which is an invention of Greg Jackson, a prominent MMA trainer. Gaidojutsu includes kickboxing skills, wrestling skills and judo. In addition to St.-Pierre, notable fighters such as Jon Jones, Keith Jardine and Nate Marquardt are also students of Gaidojutsu.

Benson Henderson’s mother was actually the one who first got him interested in martial arts, insisting that he and his brother study taekwondo as it would teach them about their Korean heritage. He earned a black belt in that martial art and also wrestled in college, earning the rank of NAIA All-American twice. He also has brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and all of this practice and study has led him to an exemplary 18-2 pro record.

If you were to name the Top Ten MMA fighters of all time, Fedor Emelianenko’s name certainly should make the list. With a career MMA record of 35-5 so far, Emelianenko is one of the sports toughest competitors, winning his fights with a versatile mix that includes 11 knockouts and 16 submissions. He is also has won four World Sambo Championships and six Russian Sambo Championships. Sambo, which includes different types of wrestling and also judo, was created in Russia during the late 1930s. Emelianenko also has completed much Muay Thai and boxing training and holds a black belt in judo.

Jon Jones skill set includes a mix of Muay Thai, Gaidojutsu and Greco-Roman wrestling. In 18 professional bouts, Jones has lost just one fight thus far. He was a state champion as a high school wrestler, so while you might expect the majority of his wins to be due to submission, he has eight total wins by knockout.
